Arthur - A Poem

uncle arthur came calling today
just in time to spoil the celebrations
and rain on everyone's parade.
we heard he was in the country
and thought he might skip us and pass on by.
but he decided to stop and visit awhile
before continuing his journey north.
of course the children and dogs were afraid of him -
huddling around their mothers and in the kitchen,
even before he was in good sight.
such a racket he can make.
and this time he was in especially loud form.

if there's anything fragile laying about
you'd better put it out of sight -
he takes no care
and tramples anything he comes across.

as he settles in with us
he begins spinning his tale.
it's always the same story -
how he started out just a little wisp of a thing
and how he grew
meandering about down south -
island hopping
and when he was big enough and old enough
he left his modest beginnings
to come and show us
his new-found boldness.

he cast his fury upon us -
his voice booming - around us - through us
until finally the floodgates broke
and water - everywhere.

mid-tale - he calms himself for awhile - as always.
we sit back and rest.
 but it's a short repose.
he lifts himself up - slowly at first
then faster and faster
he gains momentum
and works himself int a state.

there is nothing we can do
but watch him storm about
until he's tired of us
and leaves
on his journey - north.
