Poem - On Truth

On Truth

Speak to me of truth.
Tell me the truth
Truly dear.

Oh that's a hard one
my darling
for what truths do you desire?

Is there a god?
Is there life after death?
Was JFK's assassination a conspiracy?

Or perhaps you desire the truth about yourself.
Are you special?
Are you talented?
Are you unique?
Are you loved?

The truth is:
The truth abides with you
and you alone
and with me
and me alone
and most certainly with Keats
and Keats alone.
" Beauty is truth, truth beauty,- that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."

Poem - In Time

 In Time
in 1000 years
3014
if numbers are still useful then
and used to measure time
America's legacy of slavery
1655 - 1865
210 years in duration
will have been forgotten
and may be only a footnote
in some old book
or redundant  digital device
and will no longer reside
as a boil
ready to erupt
just beneath our skins
a factor coloring our encounters
with each other

and if humans are alive
in 3014
and the world has progressed
and human civil rights
are preserved
and furthered
and kindness and logic
rule
then we - the whites
will finally be freed

Richmond - A Poem

About the poem's inception and construction:
  • This poem is in Choka form (alternating 5 and 7 syllables per line with the final line being 7 syllables)
  • We were asked to think of some trivial wish - something we would like to change and then pick 5 words/phrases from a box and used them in the poem.  After thinking of trivialities in my life like "I wish I could find a new pair of black cowboy boots, and "I wish I could find a good dentist" I landed upon "I wish I didn't have so much holding me in Richmond, Va.
  • The words I randomly selected were: custom fit, analyze, look up, dollar, relax

Here's the poem:   Richmond
richmond virginia
you've got a hold on me
i've tried to break free
but you keep pulling me back
i want to explore
i've longed for arizona
the shores of scotland
and the pacific northwest

the universe speaks
richmond virginia is home
custom fit for you
i've already analyzed pros and cons
here's the place to be
why do you say no and leave
don't fight me on this
see the dollars to be made
relax, look up, all is well
